Mossie Martin
Fiddle player Mossie Martin hails from Derrynacoosan near the village of Keadue in north Roscommon, Ireland. His style is rooted in the North Connaught tradition and he plays the music of the region drawing on recordings and compositions of Turlough Carolan, Michael Coleman, James Morrison, Paddy Killoran, John McKenna, Josie McDermott, Charlie Lennon, Michael Rooney, John Carty and Matt Molloy among others. He performs regularly with the Sligo-based Dartry Céilí Band with whom he has won the All-Ireland Senior Céilí Band competition (Tullamore, 2009) and recorded three albums – ‘Killavil Post’ (2010), ‘Making Tracks’ (2014) and ‘Dance Upon the Mountains’ (2023).
Mossie has collaborated with other traditional Irish artists including Draíocht (June McCormack & Michael Rooney), Leonard Barry, Sean & Noelle Carroll, Michael Holmes, Bernard Flaherty, Donal O’Connor and Seamie O’Dowd. A tutor of the well-established Traditional Irish Music Course based in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim, he has been performing and teaching traditional music for over two decades and has recorded several times with the Dartry Ceili Band, Lúnasa and Dervish. He has toured with Dervish and featured in festivals in Spain, France, Australia and Ireland. In 2019, he released a semi-solo album entitled ‘The Humours of Derrynacoosan’ which features John Blake on guitar and keyboard and Mossie’s brother Brendan (fiddle and banjo), sister Áine (harp) and father Tom (harmonica) on several tracks.
